Improving performance and extending the lifetime of a battery is necessary for continued, widespread growth of new energy storage technologies. To ensure improved energy storage systems for the future, researchers at BTC seek new ways to investigate the processes that occur in a battery and directly assess battery characteristics. Researchers look at the rapid analysis of trace electrical signals and apply these analyses to better understand battery aging, chemistry, and environmental conditions. By combining existing information with additional insight gained from their own advanced models, BTC researchers are able to better predict whether a battery will continue to meet expectations for specific applications, such as in electric vehicles. This knowledge can then be applied to projects of all levels, from early-stage research and development to validation processes for products about to enter the commercial market.
